The Mom! Where's my car? wall garage (by A Lo and Behold Life) was created out of a Mom and Dad's desperate need to get their twin boys' growing collection of toy cars off the floor.
Since the 1950's children have been captivated by Matchbox® and Hot Wheels® toy cars. They love the ones that look like race cars, daddy's car, construction trucks, the ones in that movie… all of them. In their minds they can never have too many. Keep 'em comin'!
My boys are no different. Their infatuation with all things on four wheels started at a very young age. I can hardly find a baby picture without one of them holding a toy car in his tiny little hand. My husband and I found ourselves using these cars as a cheap & quick reward system, "If you are good for mommy in the grocery store you can pick out a new toy car at the check out counter." YAY! Before we knew it, the overwhelming toy car collection was growing up and over the broken & warped storage basket in the playroom and migrating to all parts of our home. Have you ever stepped on one of these cars? OUCH! And don't even get me started on those last minute manhunts for that particular red race car when you're racing out the door.
Something had to be done.
I searched high and low for a functional and affordable storage solution for these cars. But everything out there was either really expensive or just not practical for a 2 year old, never mind two of them. Then I discovered that with a little ingenuity and creativity I could repurpose a shoe rack to create a wall unit that would organize their entire toy car collection and look really cool, too!
What I wasn't expecting was how enthusiastic my toddlers became in keeping their toy cars organized. Not only was this rack a total space saver mounted on an empty wall behind the playroom door but my 2 year olds were taking responsibility for cleaning up their cars, becoming independent in finding that favorite car on his own and taking pride in their beloved toy car collection. It was a Matchbox miracle!
There was an overwhelmingly positive response when I posted the Do-It-Yourself car garage project on A Lo and Behold Life. Even Better Homes and Gardens featured the rack in their I Did It! series in the magazine's 2015 January Issue. We thought, clearly parents are in need of a practical organization solution to solve their household toy car storage dilemma. With a little encouragement from family and friends the wall garage was put into production.
